Time and Attendance Unit  TAU

The TAU System is a Time and Attendance system that implements state-of-the-art smart card technology. The complete system includes a low cost Time and Attendance Unit and a PC for data collection and system administration.

The TAU System has been developed as a JOINT PROJECT with MANPOWER  INC.

Time and Attendance Unit (TAU)
The TAU system was designed for four main human-resource management sectors:

  • Companies with Dispersed Personnel
Companies whose personnel are widely dispersed, active in several locations or require mobility.   These include

    • various service providers
      • utilities
      • security
      • janitorial services
      • cleaning
    • employment agencies.
  • Small and Medium Sized Offices

  •  This environment for the TAU based system includes small and medium sized offices.  Each TAU Unit can retain from 4 to 30 man-months of thime and attendance activity (depending on unit configuration), making the TAU system ideal for such locations.
  • Numerous Entry and Exit Gates

  •  The third sector for which the TAU system is adapted includes companies with numerius access portals.  The flexibility and the low cost of the TAU unit allow it to be placed at numerous locations around a site to enhance convenience and reduce congestion.
  • Temporary Locations

  •  The fourth application environment for the TAU includes temporary sites that require Time and Attendance management.  The TAU devices are easily placed on site, then removed as requierd.

The TAU Unit
At the heart of the system is the TAU (Time and Attendance Unit).  This is a compact, portable, handheld unit that includes a smart card reader, LCD display, Real Time Clock, and non-volatile memory.  The unit is battery powered and does not require external electric power or any means of communications to carry out all the system functionalities (external power supply and serial communications are optionally available).
Thus, applying the unit does not place any burden on the environment, and does not necessitate any on-site support such as electricity, telephone access or computer connectivity.
  • Portable & Compact
  • Battery Powered

  •
  • Totally Self Contained

  •
  • User Friendly
TAU Cards
The TAU system employs three distinct chip cards. Each card serves in a different functionality.
The system cards include:
  • The Employee Card
This card contains personal information on the employee, and accumulates entry and exit information relating to the employee attendance.
  • The Supervisor Card
The Supervisor Card allows the operator to set the time and date of the unit.  It also serves to confirm employee entry,  for Employee cards that require supervisory attendance confirmation.
  • The Accumulator Card
This card serves as one of the memory media by which the TAU Unit employee-attendance data is downloaded.
System Activities
A typical  system includes the following sequence of events:
  1. The Employee Card is issued at the Central Office Issuing Station (a PC).
  2. The employee clocks in and out at the TAU units dispersed among the vaious office and sites he visits.
  3. Once a month (or periodically) the employee attendance records are downloaded to the Central Office facility.

Downloading can be implemented in one of the two manners:

  • Inserting the Employee Card at the Discharge Station (PC based).
  • Downloading the TAU Unit into an Accumulator Card, which is thereafter inserted and discharged at a Dischage Station.
TAU Configurations

The TAU Unit may applied in three configurations:

  • As a portable unit, carried by the employee from one location to another.
  • Located in a dedicated, wall mounted, enclosure for permanent and semi-permanent use.
  • Placed in a dedicated, decorative, desktop stand.
Support Packages

The TAU system includes a comprehensive support package for a PC enviroment (Windows '95, '98 and NT).

This package includes the following elements:
Card Personalization and Issuing Package:  Allows creation of Accumulator cards, as well as creation and personalization of Employee and Supervisor cards. Download and Central Administration package:  This software package performs all of the downloading, accumulation, processing and maintenance of the Time & Attendance  information in a database.  It also provides output of the information in an ASCII file, for embedding and assimilation into existng Personal Management Systems. Card Reader and Display package:  Optionally for use on site to access the information on Personal or Supervisor cards.

Smart Card Controller SCC

The Smart Card Controller (SCC) is a family of modular, configurable and programmable general purpose controllers for use in smart card based systems.
It is especially adapted for unattended smart card applications, including:
  • Electronic Purse
  • Credit, Debit, Loyalty, and value.
  • Vending, Copy Machine and Commercial Laundering Machines.
  • Access Control, Electronic Gates and Time and Attendance.
  • Computer and Telephony control.
  • Gaming Machines.
Smart Card Controller (SCC)
Use of the Smart Card Controller replaces coins operation, thus eliminating the need for coin collection and maintenance and service calls.

The SCC controllers are designed for simple integration into exisiting systems, creating new smart card schemes or supporting multi-applicational and/or multicard functions. Controllability includes most mechanical, electromechanical and serial control disciplines. Stored value schemes of single and multiple pricing and value are supported.

The Controllers allow retention of transaction data, configuration, controller specific and application oriented parameters. These include hot lists and user identification data. They are accessible through the communication port of the controller.

The SCC is available in two packaging  designs:
  • The SCC-X (External Controller) is designed for external mounting.
  • The SCC-M (Embedded Controller) is designed to be embedded into an enclosure, requiring a standard bill accepting cutout in the enclosure face.

Both versions are robust and abuse resistant.

Aurora provides software libraries and instructions for OEM and third party developers.  These allow application developers to generate their own code for the SCC.
Alternatively, Aurora offers to implement the application for Application and System Installation Houses.
